A diet is for life

Does that sound awful?

Not if you understand that your diet is simply the total of what you eat and drink. The word “diet”, is so often used now for one purpose that when many people hear the term, they think only of a short term attempt to lose weight.  But our diet is our means of survival and really is for life – for better or worse.

Do weight loss diets work?

Well, it’s a simple law of physics.  If you eat more than you need to function in a day, you gain weight.  If you eat less that your body needs to function in a day, you lose weight.  If you eat the same amount as your body requires, your weight stays the same.  It is as simple as that.

Does exercise make you lose weight?

It still depends on how much you eat and drink.  When you exercise, your body requires more energy than if you do nothing.  However, to lose weight, you must still take in less than you use up – so you still have to pay attention to your diet.

So why do we look for other ways to lose weight?

There are a lot of us out there who would love to find the secret pill to make us slim overnight or for science to come up with a reason why we are meant to be overweight so that it’s not our fault (it is actually rare to find medical reasons for being heavy).  And quite a few of us, I suspect, think that exercise is a great idea – for other people.

Why are we over-complicating the simple formula of eat less = lose weight?

Because life is complicated.  We are complex creatures with highly developed brains – and that’s where our trouble starts.  Have you ever seen a fat zebra?  Of course not – you’d be skinny too if you ran a lot and just ate grass.  Animals eat to survive but we have turned our basic survival needs into an art form.  Unfortunately, many of us are not skilled artists and might need a little help from our friends.

How can I get the help I need?
